Equine Assisted Learning at Sunshine Coast RDA
Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is a program that enables young people to engage in social, emotional and self development through horses. EAL uses horses to facilitate a situation where young people can experience the effects of their behaviour, then reflect on what has happened in order to make changes to their behaviour. This is also called experiential learning and is especially suited to people who have difficulty understanding abstract concepts like emotions and interpersonal skills.
The use of horses is a crucial part of the program's success as they allow people to learn through two way communication without having to read body language in other people. Horses give clear and straightforward messages whereas people don’t! A horses’ body language is their only means of communicating and these signals are consistent and non-discriminatory. This makes horses uniquely capable of facilitating personal development through experiential learning.
The SCRDA EAL program Sessions are tailored to each person’s individual goals and learning style. It is a ground based program and is about teaching self development and emotional intelligence skills, not horse riding.
There is a cost of $30 per half hour session and a one off membership fee of $25.
We are also offering group sessions which are especially beneficial to youth at risk. These sessions can be tailored to your organisation.
